🔊🧬 Sound waves are becoming part of the cancer-treatment toolbox—but the technology is much more targeted than viral headlines suggest. A technology called high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) uses concentrated sound waves to generate heat at a specific location inside the body. The goal is to damage targeted tissue while minimizing injury to surrounding areas. 🎯 Researchers have been studying focused ultrasound for several cancers and tumors, and the FDA has authorized specific ultrasound-based systems for particular medical uses. One fascinating direction is histotripsy, which uses focused ultrasound pulses to mechanically disrupt targeted tissue rather than relying mainly on heat. But here's the important distinction: ❌ It does not mean sound waves have replaced surgery or chemotherapy for cancer. Cancer treatment still depends on the type, stage, location and biology of the tumor. Some patients may need surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy—or combinations of these. 💡 The exciting part is that ultrasound technology is giving doctors another way to target abnormal tissue without making a traditional incision in certain carefully selected situations. 📌 Source: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); National Cancer Institute (NCI); peer-reviewed research on focused ultrasound and histotripsy. #CancerResearch #FocusedUltrasound #Histotripsy #CancerTreatment #MedicalTechnology #Oncology #MedicalResearch #CancerScience #HealthInnovation #HealthyMinded
