I find this perspective of people believing that addiction is just a choice that people make is incredibly insensitive. Addiction isn’t simply a matter of “knowing better” and making a bad choice. Many people who struggle with substance use are responding to trauma, abuse, mental illness, or circumstances they didn’t choose. Reducing addiction to a moral failure ignores decades of medical and psychological understanding. Blanket statements like this don’t show strength or accountability—they show a lack of empathy and an unwillingness to understand experiences beyond one’s own.
