Embracing the Water: Learning to Swim as an Adult
I used to dread getting my face wet as a kid, but in grad school, I decided it was time to conquer my fear. Starting with small steps—like dunking myself—I gradually worked up the courage to swim. It wasn’t easy at first, but studying a book on swimming and hitting the pool for exercise helped me push through the anxiety.
To my surprise, swimming became my go-to workout and even earned the nickname “my thing” among friends. If you’re hesitant about learning to swim as an adult, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Many community pools offer adult lessons, often taught by lifeguards, so it’s less intimidating.
Swimming is fantastic exercise, and I miss it dearly, especially since shoulder issues sidelined me. But here’s a pro tip: if you want to avoid that chlorine smell, grab a swim cap (even for short hair) and use swim-friendly shampoo. And always shower afterward!
