When 5,000 Kilometers Feels Like Standing Still
We’re 65 and 64, hiking across Europe because we thought it would mean something. In Hungary’s Burok-Völgy, the valley is silent except for our boots and the way my wife’s breath catches when the path gets steep.
People say this is the dream—retirement, adventure, a map with no end. But the truth is, sometimes I look at her and wonder if we’re chasing distance because we’re scared of what happens when we stop. The valley is beautiful, yes, but it’s also empty. We walk, and walk, and the kilometers stack up, but the questions we left home with are still packed in my bag.
No one tells you that sometimes, moving forward feels exactly like standing still.
