Can oil go bad just sitting in your engine? 😂
Strange question, right..? But it does make sense. I used to think oil only went bad when you drove a lot. Turns out, that’s not true at all. Even if your car is just sitting in the garage for months, the oil inside is still aging. Moisture sneaks in, temperature changes mess with it, and all those additives that keep things smooth slowly lose their magic.
I learned this the hard way. I had an old car that stopped running and sat for almost five years. I never bothered changing the oil. When I finally opened it up, the oil had turned into this thick, sticky jelly. Not oil anymore — just a dark sludge that smelled awful.
The problem is that when oil sits too long, it stops protecting your engine. That thin layer that keeps metal from grinding against metal disappears. Moisture mixes with the oil and creates acids, which slowly eat away at parts. Sludge builds up and the engine has to work harder, burning more gas for less power. At last the mechanic told me that I should change my oil every six to twelve months, even if I barely drive. 😄 It’s a lot cheaper than dealing with a clogged, corroded engine later.
