The Universe Might Collapse. So Might I.
I read the new dark energy paper at 2am, the lab lights humming, the coffee cold. They say the universe might not just drift apart forever—maybe it collapses, all that expansion just a phase before the crunch. I wonder if my work is like that: years of stretching, chasing data, and then—nothing.
The models change, the constants aren’t constant, and I’m supposed to keep up. My PI calls it exciting. I call it exhausting. Every time the universe gets rewritten, I rewrite my proposal, my code, my expectations.
Sometimes I think about the universe folding in on itself and it feels like a metaphor for this job. Maybe we’re all just waiting for the collapse, pretending the acceleration is progress.
