100+ smallmouth in 8 hours from a tiny creek
Last weekend, I hit my favorite little creek in Central NY—nothing fancy, just classic summer low water, deep holes, and over 100 smallmouth in one day. Every summer like clockwork, these fish stack up, and the bite gets wild. Here’s how I find my honey holes and stay light on gear:
1️⃣ Use Google Maps to scout for deep spots—look for cliffs or drop-offs.
2️⃣ Watch water flow data to time your trip when fish are concentrated.
3️⃣ Keep it simple: a short rod, braid with fluoro leader, and a fanny pack of craws, tubes, and topwaters.
4️⃣ Focus on deep holes, boulder fields, and eddies at the end of rapids—these are smallie magnets.
5️⃣ Expect to lose some tackle—cast upstream and work it naturally downstream to reduce snags.
Creek fishing like this reminds me why I fell in love with the sport. Who else chases smallies in the heat?
