What Photos Never Show You About the Desert

You can scroll through a hundred photos of the Petrified Forest and still not feel how the wind stings your face or how the silence presses in. I hiked eight miles—Long Logs, Agate House, Crystal Forest, Blue Mesa, Painted Desert Rim, Tawa—each trail a different kind of quiet. The colors are unreal, but the emptiness is what sticks. You stand in a place older than memory, holding a camera that can’t capture the weight of it. I kept taking pictures, hoping one would explain why I felt both tiny and cracked open. None did.
