Is School Killing Our Kids’ Creativity? A Teacher’s Eye-Opening Story
As a 5th grade Social Studies teacher, I recently assigned my students a project: create a business from scratch. They had to invent a product, design a logo, come up with a catchy slogan, set prices—the whole nine yards. We even wrapped it up with a Shark Tank-style pitch. You’d think this would be a dream for creative kids, right?
But here’s what happened: One boy, working on a cat furniture business, just sat there, staring into space. When I checked in, he was clearly frustrated. He told me, “I used to be so creative, but school makes me uncreative.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony. The whole point of this project was to spark creativity! But his words stuck with me. Are our schools really crushing kids’ imagination? Are we training them to follow rules instead of thinking outside the box?
This isn’t just one kid’s complaint. I’ve heard similar things from other students and even parents. Maybe it’s time we ask ourselves: Are our schools encouraging creativity, or are they just producing rule-followers? What do you think? Share your experiences below—let’s get real about what’s happening in our classrooms.
