Dennis Schröder: “I Won’t Receive the Same Love in Germany as Dirk Because I’m Dark-Skinned”

Dennis Schröder opened up in a recent interview about the differences between how he’s viewed compared to German legend Dirk Nowitzki. “I was already sitting in front of the TV at the age of 14 when Dirk carried the flag at the 2008 Olympics. Back then, I thought: How cool, there can’t be a greater honor. Today, however, I know: It will never be the same for me as it was for Dirk. I won’t receive the same love in this country because I’m dark-skinned.” Schröder admitted he hasn’t always fit the German public’s expectations of how a star should behave, especially when he was younger, but he emphasized that judgment based on race or image remains a societal problem. Despite the challenges, Schröder says he plans to return home after his NBA career: “Braunschweig is my home. That’s why I bought the basketball club there, and that’s why we’re planning academies, camps, and schools for young people.” Currently preparing for the European Championship and his first season with the Sacramento Kings, Schröder made his goals clear: “We will win the title. If I wasn’t convinced of that, I wouldn’t play in the tournament.” #NBA #DennisSchroder #DirkNowitzki #Germany #SacramentoKings #EuroBasket #Basketball #FIBA #BasketballHistory #Sports
