2024 Perfume Diary (a.k.a. me trying to “buy less”)

I told myself I’d buy less this year. I didn’t. I mean, I tried. I even switched to samples and decants toward the end of the year—something about hoping to travel more, not wanting to drag full bottles around. But if I love something? Yeah… I’ll probably cave and get the full size when the sample’s 1/3 gone. My perfume of the year: MDCI L’Amoureux. Soft, ink-toned, warm, familiar in a way I can’t explain. People keep complimenting it. Year-round wear, zero aggression. Just… gentle. Sample of the year (tie): — Yalann’s Wild Garlic: a bit green, a touch soapy, oddly expensive. I feel a little scammed but also adored. — Byredo Blanche: people say Clean is cheaper and better, but I smelled it in-store and something clicked. It’s fresh. Half gone already. Worth it. Biggest heartbreak: Zegna Iris. I found it. Loved it. Realized it was discontinued. Resellers want a fortune, so I settled for a decant. If You Love Celine Black Tie, These Are My Workday Go-Tos

I blind-bought Celine Black Tie in 2021 because of the name. Back then it was $1.7k RMB—now it’s crazy expensive. But god, it’s clean and sharp and always gets compliments. I wear it solo or layer it with Loewe Solo Ella in summer. Also love Aesop Tacit—fresh-woodsy, reminds me of a quiet guy in a gray suit (I live in a village, but let me dream). Diptyque Philosykos smells green and milky, like fig skin. I spray it on my scarf and sniff all day. Some days I wear Terre d’Hermès. Any fellow green grass scent lovers out there? 🌿🚗

I once bought an IKEA green grass diffuser for my car… My dad sniffed it, said “hmm, nice,” and stole it. I missed the scent so much I went hunting on Fragrantica. Ended up blind-buying Guerlain Herba Fresca — couldn’t afford the pricier Herbes Troublantes from their exclusive line. This one? Definitely grassy. Think fresh-cut stems, a bit of crushed mint, even a hint of earthy roots. No offense if you love them — totally just my nose talking here. Burberry Her (the original one) — everyone says it’s amazing, but to me? Straight-up floral body splash. Like fancy bug spray. What perfume do I wear most? Depends on the day, honestly.

Weekdays it’s usually Davidoff Cool Water Men. Safe, fresh, no drama. I’ve worn it for years — smells like “let’s just get through the day.” Weekends I switch to YSL Opium. No one ever says it smells good. I love that. I hate the whole “boy-magnet perfume” thing anyway. Why should I smell like someone else’s idea of cute? Once, in Melbourne by the ocean, I wore D&G Light Blue and felt like the color pale blue. Wind in my hair, sunscreen half rubbed in, perfect. TF Black Orchid is my going-out scent now — with Cherry Lush lipstick. That combo makes me feel a little dangerous. And sometimes, it’s just Chanel Bleu, sprayed on a winter coat. Something about men’s cologne in cold weather feels… grounding. I guess I do like masculine scents more. Always have. #beauty #fragrance #smellslikehome

Just found out not all perfumes are sold in those pretty full boxes with shiny caps. So here’s the deal: “Tester” perfumes = the big bottles they use at stores for people to try. They’re real, same juice, but usually no fancy box or cap. Just a plain cardboard box. Sometimes even says “not for sale” on the bottle. Brands don’t sell them officially, but people still get their hands on them and resell online. Perfect if you’re buying for yourself and don’t care about the packaging. Not great for gifts—unless your friend enjoys saving money more than unboxing. Lira by Xerjoff – Smelled this thinking it’d be a full-on dessert vibe. It’s not. More like: blood orange, sugar dust, a flower on the table. Kinda girly, kinda fancy, but not edible.
