A Belated Feast: July 4th Memories Abroad
Last night, halfway across the world from home, I found myself craving a taste of July 4th. It was already July 5th here, but nostalgia hit hard. I gathered a few friends—none of them American—and we tried to recreate a classic Independence Day dinner. No fireworks, no backyard BBQ, just a tiny kitchen and mismatched ingredients. We grilled chicken on a stovetop pan, tossed together a salad with whatever greens we could find, and even attempted a makeshift apple pie with local fruit.
As we ate, I shared stories of summer nights back home: the smell of smoke, laughter echoing across lawns, the sky bursting with color. My friends listened, wide-eyed, and for a moment, I felt both homesick and deeply grateful. Food has a way of connecting us, even when we’re far from where we started. Have you ever celebrated a holiday far from home? How did you make it special?
