Why I Only Hike When the Light’s Fading

There’s a reason I wait for the last hour of sun before I start moving. In the White Mountains, the trails empty out. The air cools, and the shadows get long enough to hide in. I don’t hike for the views, not really. I hike because it’s the only time I can hear myself think—when everyone else is heading down, and I’m still climbing. Sometimes, the quiet is heavy.
