My Journey with Lupus Nephritis: Diagnosis and Skyrocketing Medical Bills
In August 2023, my life took an unexpected turn. On the 19th, I found myself in the ER at NYU Langone Hospital, and by the 21st, I was officially diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The following day, a kidney biopsy confirmed Lupus Nephritis Type 4. After a challenging stay, I was discharged on August 29th.
Just two months later, I received a heart-stopping medical bill for nearly $280,000! After negotiations between the insurance company and the hospital, the bill was reduced to about $110,000. With my insurance's maximum out-of-pocket being $3,000, I ended up paying around $2,400. I'll share more about my post-diagnosis journey and test results soon.
