☄️ TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL ASTEROID DAY! 🌍 Every year on June 30, the world observes International Asteroid Day to remember the 1908 Tunguska Event—the largest asteroid impact in recorded history. An asteroid exploded high above Siberia with the force of a massive blast, flattening an estimated 80 million trees across more than 2,000 square kilometers of forest. Fortunately, the region was sparsely populated, preventing a far greater disaster. In 2016, the United Nations officially recognized June 30 as International Asteroid Day to raise global awareness about asteroid impact hazards and the importance of detecting and tracking near-Earth objects before they become a threat. Today, astronomers have discovered more than 36,000 near-Earth asteroids, and space agencies around the world continuously monitor the skies while developing planetary defense technologies to protect our planet. Asteroids aren't just potential hazards—they're also ancient leftovers from the birth of our Solar System, preserving clues about how Earth and the other planets formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Studying them helps scientists unlock the history of our cosmic neighborhood and prepare for the future. 🌌 Happy International Asteroid Day! Stay curious, keep looking up, and remember: understanding space is one of the best ways to protect our home. #InternationalAsteroidDay #AsteroidDay #Space #Astronomy #PlanetaryDefense #Asteroids #NASA #ESA #Science #Astro4Space
