Tokyo’s Art Scene Steps Out of the Shadows and Into the Spotlight
Despite Japan’s global reputation for innovation and creativity, its art market has long played a surprisingly small role on the world stage—claiming just 1% of global art sales. Enter Tokyo Gendai, a new art fair that’s shaking up expectations and drawing international attention to the city’s vibrant creative pulse.
This year’s debut brought together 73 galleries, including 44 from abroad, making it the country’s most internationally connected fair in decades. Local collectors—once the backbone of the market—are now joined by a fresh wave of young buyers and gallerists, fueling a surge in sales and energy.
Tokyo’s neighborhoods, from Harajuku to Roppongi, are alive with cutting-edge galleries and late-night art events, while major institutions and private foundations are stepping up to foster global dialogue. Even government policy is shifting, making it easier for international galleries to do business.
Japan’s art world may have been a mystery, but with Tokyo Gendai’s arrival, the city is ready to be seen—and to see itself anew.
