The Israelites are dying from venomous snakebites, and God tells Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone who looks at it is healed. Wait... didn't God just forbid making graven images? Why a snake?! Then a commentary completely blew my mind: The snake represented the CURSE of their sin. They had to look directly at the exact thing that was killing them in order to be saved. Hundreds of years later, Jesus said He would be lifted up the exact same way. He became the curse for us.
