Landscaper hit me with a $12k invoice I can't pay 😵

As a new homeowner, I’m still learning the cost of landscaping. Last year, a landscaper did about $1,200 of work for me. He disappeared for months, then reappeared in March with a late invoice, which I paid. This spring, he did some cleanup, and in June we agreed—verbally—that he’d do more work: weeding, pruning, brush removal, trimming, mulch, and maybe a few plants. He mentioned boxwoods at $40 each and said he’d throw in some junipers. I thought we had a rough understanding of the cost. Instead, he showed up with a bunch of plants - junipers, boxwoods, spiraeas, hydrangeas, and two small Japanese maples - and did the work. I kept asking for receipts and an invoice. After two months, he finally sent one, and I was shocked. Nearly every line was marked up. Labor went from $55 to $60 an hour without warning. Yard-waste removal jumped from $100 to $300. Mulch was hundreds more than we’d discussed. The maples were listed at $1,300 each, even though they’re tiny—way above market rate. I went to a reputable nursery to compare prices, and nothing he planted matches the cost he’s charging 😓😮‍💨😩 especially the maples. I’m considering asking him to honor last year’s labor and disposal rates, correct the mulch pricing, and take back the maples and boxwoods. I’d keep the rest and pay for removal if needed. But I don’t know how realistic that is or whether he’ll even listen. 😫 #Homeownership #Landscaping #ContractorIssues #Home

Weekend in the Bay Area | Fairytale Neighborhood Crafted by Iron Art & Landscaping 🌸

The town of Sebastopol, being close to the Bay Area with few people and beautiful scenery, is an awesome place to chill and wander around on the weekend. What makes this town special? A lot of houses have artistic creations in various cartoon forms made of tin. Florence Ave leads the pack, with each house front boasting a piece of iron art. Initially, you'd think these artworks are made by the residents. Turns out, all of this Junk Art was created by the couple Patrick Amiot and Brigitte Laurent. It's usually Patrick constructing the pieces from various types of discarded items, then Brigitte applies the paint, bringing the whole artwork together. Each piece is full of imagination, iron craftsmanship and gardening complementing each other perfectly. The main ingredient is tin, with various discarded items as supporting materials. The two artists, with their passion, created a fairytale world full of cartoon characters. Here's a rundown: 🐷 The pink pig is actually a mailbox! 🦉 The owl is simply exquisite. 🐸 The color combination of the frog prince rocks! Fairytale walk with a little "surprise", like the unexpected skeleton riding a motorcycle. Upon close examination of each piece, each part is made of different things. A flashlight as a nose, a watch band as eyebrows, and nails as feet. Unexpectedly, things that seem random come together to form such harmonious sculptures. At first glance, you'd think it's solely about iron art, but it's actually upcycled art. Tips: 🌟 This is a residential area, be respectful not to disturb the locals. Keep the noise down - definitely do NOT open the mailbox sculptures! 🌟 Make sure to keep a distance from the artworks/front yards. 📍 Florence Avenue Art Walk Florence Ave, Sebastopol, CA 95472 Driving from the Bay Area 🚗 will take you about 1.5-2 hours #WeekendInTheBayArea #Sebastopol #IronArt #Landscaping #FairytaleNeighborhood #UpcycledArt #FlorenceAveArtWalk #BayArea

The rock drainage pit didn’t drain... and now I’ve got a mini pond. help!!!

I recently built a rock drainage pit at the corner of my yard to handle runoff from a gutter extension. I ran water through the gutter for 10 minutes to test it... and two hours later, I’ve got myself a stagnant little rock pool. Hardly any drainage happened. The soil underneath is super compacted, and I’m starting to think the landscaping fabric might be making things worse by trapping the water. I’m in Central Texas, if that helps with any soil/climate-related suggestions. Any tips on how to actually get this thing draining properly? I'm already dreading having to shovel all the rocks back out again, so if there's a way to fix it without starting from scratch, I’m all ears. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏 #DrainageDesign #YardWork #DIYFail #LandscapingAdvice #NeedHelp #Landscaping #Home #Backyard

(p2 result) DIY retaining wall, all by myself, $6000, 4 weekends 😎 full build process

This summer I finally tackled my first big retaining wall project😎 We needed a 35-foot-long wall to level out our sloped backyard, fix drainage issues, and make the space actually usable (and look way better). I chose engineered concrete blocks. They're super heavy, interlock really well, and I found them at a good price locally. For drainage and support, I used a mix of clean rock and compactable fill dirt. I also added six low-voltage cap lights on top, wired to a dusk-to-dawn timer, for both function and a nice look. I rented a skid steer for the heavy digging and hauling, and picked up a few new tools I didn't have yet, like an angle grinder and a reciprocating saw. Here is my build process: First, I measured and marked the wall line, making sure to account for the slope. Then, the skid steer did the major digging, and I finished the trench by hand. And I filled the trench with compacted gravel and obsessively checked the level. Getting this first layer perfect is everything! I stacked the wall blocks layer by layer, backfilling and compacting the dirt as I went. And I installed a French drain behind the wall with perforated pipe and clean rock. My one rookie mistake here was not using drain fabric... At last, to add the lights, I drilled holes for the conduit and ran all the low-voltage wiring before placing the very last row of blocks. The budget list: skid steer rental + delivery $750 wall blocks $3500 backfill materials $1000 lighting system (lights, transformer, wiring) $350 tools + equipment (new purchases only) $450 total so far $6050 The whole project took me about 3–4 weekends, plus some evenings for planning and detail work. Still some finishing touches needed, but stoked with the progress 😎😎😎 #DIYProjects #HomeImprovement #Landscaping #BeforeAndAfter #HomeownerLife #Home #RetainingWallRenovation
