What Jesus Said About Hypocrisy
Jesus had some of His strongest words for hypocrisy. He warned people not to focus on looking righteous in front of others while ignoring what was in their hearts.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus compared hypocrites to "whitewashed tombs"—clean and beautiful on the outside, but full of decay on the inside. He taught that faith should be genuine, not a performance for others to see.
Jesus also reminded people not to judge others while ignoring their own faults, saying, "First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
His message was simple: God cares more about honesty, humility, and sincerity than outward appearances. Rather than pretending to be perfect, Jesus called people to examine their own lives, repent of their sins, and treat others with grace.
"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them." — Matthew 6:1
