We bought this house thinking we’d turn the yard into a nice native garden. What we didn’t expect was layer upon layer of plastic sheeting and mulch. First we dug out tons of weedy decorative rocks — already a nightmare. But then we hit plastic sheeting. Under the plastic, more rocks. Under those rocks, another layer of plastic. We’re now about 8 inches down, still hitting more junk. At some point we just gave up, pulled out as much as we could, added decent soil, planted our natives, and called it a day. But seriously... who does this? It’s a drainage disaster when it rains, and a fire hazard if someone drops a cigarette.
