How I Stopped Paying for New York Tolls
Every time I hit a toll in New York, it felt like tossing cash into a black hole. The numbers creep up—$16 here, $9 there—until your commute costs more than your lunch. I started mapping out routes that snaked through side streets and over the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridges, even if it meant crawling through traffic and hitting every red light. Sometimes, I’d leave an hour early just to avoid the turnpike. Google Maps became my lifeline—always set to "avoid tolls."
Carpooling shaved off a few bucks, but the real win was finally getting an E-Z Pass. Still, the rates jump without warning. Now, if I can, I bike or take the subway. It’s slower, but at least I’m not bleeding money at every bridge. If you’re tired of the endless toll drain, know this: there’s always another way across, even if it takes longer.
