Small in the Gorge, Loud in My Head

There’s a photo I never posted—me, wedged between cliffs in Flume Gorge, pretending to smile while the river below roared loud enough to drown out my thoughts. I remember feeling microscopic, not in a poetic way, but in a way that made my problems echo louder. Everyone says nature humbles you. I think it just makes you honest. Standing there, shoes soaked, I realized I wasn’t escaping anything. The cliffs didn’t care if I was overwhelmed. The rapids didn’t slow down for my anxiety. Travel didn’t fix me.
