When Teachers Miss the Mark: My AP History Meltdown
Have you ever felt like you were drowning in a sea of expectations, only to realize the lifeboat was missing a paddle? That was me, a 15-year-old student with ASD, caught in the crossfire of an AP History project gone haywire. Our group presentation on LGBT rights ballooned to 32 slides—double the (unwritten!) limit. Cue the teacher’s stern voice, point deductions, and a lesson on "critical thinking" that ignored my need for clear, written instructions.
The kicker? The rubric only suggested slide order, not a limit. Yet, my meltdown in the hallway became public spectacle. I felt invisible, my accommodations swept aside. Can a teacher teach empathy by missing the very point of inclusion? Or am I just missing something obvious?
Have you faced a similar storm? Drop your thoughts, corrections, or survival tips below. Let’s bridge these gaps together—because sometimes, the real lesson isn’t on the slides. 😵💫📝
