The "ball" is dropping twice to ring in 2026. Shortly after the ball makes its 60-second descent to signal the start of the new year, the ball will be relit with an America250 design above the illuminated "2026" numerals and be dropped again at approximately 12:04 a.m. ET. In addition to the second ball drop, a new video titled "America Turns 250," a red, white, and blue confetti drop and a "dynamic pyro finale set" to the tune of Ray Charles’ rendition of "America the Beautiful" is slated to occur. America250 will build "anticipation" for the moment with a series of features over the course of the evening, including a reveal of the America250 Ball Design atop One Times Square during “The Star-Spangled Banner" beginning at 6:04 p.m. #NewYearsRockinEve #NewYearsEve #BallDropTwice #USA #NewYork

Knicks finally hang a new banner for Spike Lee’s lifetime of fandom

Spike Lee has literally spent his whole life staring at Knicks banners. He was a kid when New York won titles in 1970 and 1973 — the last time the franchise hung an NBA championship flag in Madison Square Garden. Over the years he went so deep into his fandom that he even tracked down and bought the original 1970 championship banner that used to hang in the Garden, calling it the Knicks’ “Holy Grail.” Now, after more than half a century, the Knicks finally raised something new: the 2025 NBA Cup banner, after beating Wemby’s Spurs 124–113 in Vegas. Say what you want about the NBA Cup, but for a guy who’s been courtside through every high and low, “Spike Lee waited 53 years for the Knicks to hang a new flag” feels pretty special. #Knicks #SpikeLee #NBACup #NewBanner #NBA #NewYork #Spikelee

A group of abandoned cats was discovered malnourished and suffering in freezing temperatures outside a shopping mall in New York, prompting concern from animal welfare advocates and local residents. The cats were found huddled together near the mall’s exterior during a stretch of bitter winter weather, where temperatures had dropped well below freezing. Witnesses reported that the animals appeared thin, weak, and desperate for warmth and food. Several of the cats showed visible signs of neglect, including matted fur and lethargic behavior. Local animal control officers and rescue organizations were alerted after concerned shoppers noticed the cats and shared photos on social media. Responders quickly arrived on the scene and worked to safely capture the animals before conditions worsened. According to rescue officials, prolonged exposure to the cold combined with malnutrition can be life-threatening for cats, especially those without shelter. The cats were transported to a nearby animal shelter and veterinary clinic for evaluation and treatment. Initial assessments confirmed that many were underweight and dehydrated. Veterinarians are now providing medical care, warm shelter, and nutritional support to help stabilize the animals. Officials say it may take weeks for some of the cats to fully recover. Authorities are investigating how the cats were abandoned and are urging the public to report suspected cases of animal neglect or abandonment. Under New York law, abandoning animals in extreme weather conditions may result in fines or criminal charges. Animal welfare groups are also using the incident to remind the public of available alternatives to abandonment, including surrendering pets to shelters or contacting rescue organizations for assistance. Community members interested in helping are encouraged to donate supplies, foster animals, or consider adoption once the cats are cleared for new homes. #NewYork #AnimalCruelty #AnimalRescue #Cats #LocalNews
