🏞️ Kill Devil Hill | Wright Brothers National Memorial

Have you heard of Kill Devil Hill? It's a unique island chain on the eastern side of North Carolina, similar to Key West. I decided to check it out and was surprised to discover that it's actually the place where the Wright Brothers invented the airplane. It has now been turned into the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and it was really cool to hear the history and walk on the same grounds where the first flights took place, even in the rain. 2017, somewhere in rural Georgia. I'm three days into what was supposed to be a simple road trip when I see it—a 130-foot limestone pillar with a church perched impossibly on top. Turns out there's a monk living up there. Alone. Has been for years. No Instagram geotag led me here. No travel blog mentioned it. Just a wrong turn that became the right one. The Katskhi pillar sits in the middle of nowhere, defying logic and gravity in equal measure. I stood there for an hour, neck craned, trying to process what I was seeing. Some places don't wait to be discovered. They just appear when you stop trying so hard to find them. I never posted the photo. Sudan Has More Pyramids Than Egypt

255 pyramids stand in Sudan's desert. Egypt has around 140. You've never heard of most of them because they belong to the Kingdom of Kush—the African empire that actually conquered and ruled Egypt for nearly a century. These Nubian pharaohs built their eternal homes at Meroe, Nuri, and Kurru, creating Africa's largest collection of pyramids. The Kushites weren't copying Egypt. They were continuing a tradition they helped create, then took back home when they retreated south. Steeper, smaller, more clustered than Giza's giants—but every bit as royal. Most travelers chase the Sphinx selfie in Egypt while 255 pyramids sit empty in Sudan, holding stories of Black pharaohs who ruled both kingdoms. The tour buses never made it this far south.
