Reflecting on the fathers in the Bible, this one cultural detail completely broke me today 😭

Raising kids in this culture is so hard, and when they make terrible choices, the heartbreak is unbearable. I was reflecting on the Prodigal Son today, and I learned a historical detail that had me in tears. When the rebellious son finally came home, the father saw him from a distance and ran to him. In first-century Middle Eastern culture, elderly patriarchs wore long robes and NEVER ran. To run, he had to pull up his robes and expose his bare legs. It was considered deeply shameful and humiliating. Furthermore, the village would have had the right to stone the boy for his extreme disrespect. The father didn't run just because he was excited. He ran to intercept the boy before the angry townspeople could get to him. He took the public shame upon himself to shield his guilty child.
