Sunny Days and Sensitive Skin: Why I Now Put Sunscreen on My Dog
I used to think dog sunscreen was just a gimmick—until my Whippet, spent an afternoon basking in the backyard. She loves sunbathing, but that evening, I noticed her skin looked pink and irritated, especially around her ears and nose. I was shocked to learn that dogs can get sunburn, and some, like mine with her thin coat and light skin, are more vulnerable than others.
My vet explained that sunburn in dogs can lead to serious issues—pain, inflammation, and even skin cancer. Now, every sunny outing starts with a routine: shade breaks, early morning or late evening walks, and yes, dog-safe sunscreen. Not the kind you or I use—those often have zinc oxide or PABA, which are toxic to pets. Instead, I found a gentle, unscented formula made just for dogs with SPF 30.
Since then, no more red ears. Just a happy pup soaking in the sun—safely.
If your dog’s a sun lover too, it’s worth taking a few extra steps. Trust me, their skin will thank you.
