And yeah, I saw them—silver flashes darting below the surface, almost close enough to touch. But standing there, breathing in the so-called fresh air, I realized I was still holding my breath. No one tells you how a beautiful place can make you feel even more out of place. I watched the fish for a long time, wishing I could slip under and disappear, just for a while.
