Forests Are Sitting on a Ticking Time Bomb

Turns out, a ton of the world’s forests are hiding a dirty secret: they’re sitting right on top of massive oil, gas, and coal reserves. If those get dug up, we’re talking 317 billion tons of greenhouse gases—way more than the planet can handle. Some countries are getting paid to protect forests, but the deals don’t cover fossil fuel extraction. If we don’t stop digging, the forests (and us) are in big trouble.
