The Words We Don’t Remember, But They Do

When my eldest was little, I thought I was doing great. I had no experience, but I gave him everything I had—so I truly believed I was a good mom to him. Then came my second child. One morning, I was rushing the older one to get dressed. My younger, barely over a year old, chimed in sharply, shouting, “Now! Right now!” I was stunned. I asked, “Why are you speaking to your brother like that?” He answered plainly: “Because Mommy says that too.” My heart dropped. I turned to my older son, looking for reassurance, but he just quietly said, “Mom, you do say that… a lot.” That night, I lay awake for hours. I didn’t remember saying it that harshly. But clearly, they did. We often think we’re doing fine—until our reflection comes back in the form of our children’s voices. That moment changed how I speak to them forever.
