Getting a gecko? Here’s what no one tells you!
I recently got a gecko, and here’s what I wish someone had told me:
It smells.
I didn’t realize just how much the enclosure and the bugs they eat (like mealworms) would stink. The gecko's tank needs cleaning every 3-4 days, and it’s a lot of work, especially with those smelly worms.
The cost is more than you think.
While geckos are cheaper than cats and dogs, you still need to account for the tank setup, food, and maintenance. Plus, finding a good source to buy from can be tricky.
Watch out for genetic issues.
I learned the hard way that some geckos carry genetic conditions, like “lemon frost,” which can cause health problems. Be sure to check for that before buying!
Shedding problems.
I missed one of my gecko’s shedding periods, and it got stuck in the skin. It took a lot of effort to fix it, but it was stressful. Make sure you’re checking regularly!
Would love to hear any advice or experiences from fellow gecko owners! 🦎 #GeckoCare #ReptileCare
