Why Is It So Hard to Just Drive Considerately?

Why do so many drivers go out of their way to inconvenience others? Is it poor manners, or just plain selfishness? I’m honestly tired of asking. Today I drove less than 20 kilometers in the city, and it still felt like a battlefield. First, a car tailgated me while I was accelerating and then suddenly cut in from the right—I had to brake hard to avoid a collision. Then, just as I was about to overtake a tanker truck, it drifted into my lane without a signal. Again, I hit the brakes. A third driver tried to turn right across my straight path even though I’d already passed—and if I hadn’t slowed down, we would’ve crashed. The final straw was a semi-truck randomly parked in the right lane near a light. I signaled early to change lanes, but the driver behind me sped up and honked, just to block me. I always try not to bother others on the road. If I make a mistake, I feel bad and correct it. But it seems like more and more people just don’t care. That’s what makes driving so frustrating these days. Have you noticed this too? Want to See Who’s Selfish? Just Hit the Road

I often tell my friends: if you want to know how many selfish people there are in society, just go for a drive. Nothing reveals someone’s character like being behind the wheel. Driving is a social activity—it only works when everyone follows the rules. But selfish drivers put their own comfort above everything else. They slow down to search for directions with cars piling up behind them. They cruise at 90 km/h in the fast lane because that feels “safe” to them, ignoring the flow of traffic. They cut into exit lanes at the last second or block others because missing a turn is unthinkable to them. Then there’s the worst: those who use the emergency lane to skip traffic, not caring that they could be blocking ambulances. It’s all small stuff, until someone gets hurt. A considerate driver respects others even when no one’s watching. A selfish one? You’ll spot them from a mile away. Have you noticed this too?
