malonestephen+FollowMy opinion, maybe controversial, on a teen's first carThe world isn't really built for kids to move around in anymore. Fewer teens than ever are getting their driver's license, but some still need to drive. And that raises a big question. It raises the question of what kind of car you give a barely grown kid with an underdeveloped brain. In my opinion, the answer is a manual transmission. I gave my kids a 2000 Ford Escort with a stick shift and no radio. It forced them to focus on driving and feel the car without any distractions. It eventually died, but it taught my daughter a valuable skill. She now works at a dealership, and they have to pull her out of the office to move stick-shift cars because none of the salesmen can drive one. Contrast that with my first car, a rusty '68 Impala with a V8 engine. It had terrible handling and could do a burnout but not much else. It was a beast, but somehow I survived it.
