We never talked about how it would end, but once work came back into the picture, so did reality. Things just faded out. Still, I catch myself smiling when I think about it because for a couple of months life really did feel perfect. Every summer, I travel and meet someone, and it's like a crazy, electric bubble forms that only includes the two of us. One of my most memorable summer flings was with a guy I met in France. He had been with the same girl for 12 years. He asked me for a cigarette, we started talking, and we were instantly inseparable. We knew we wouldn't be able to stop ourselves if we even brushed hands. So, 45 minutes into the conversation, we made a pact never to touch each other. I was leaving in a week. We spent the entire time not touching at all, just wandering and talking until dawn. We barely slept. He had a hammock that he'd read to me in while I slept for a few hours. Then I'd wake up and make coffee while he slept. It was all about the connection, not the physical part. I have so many of these stories. Like the time I met a guy at Comic-Con and we ended up sleeping on the doorstep of my hostel because he couldn't get in. Summer flings for me are the most intense relationship possible.
