What Happens If You Hit a Deer on a Test Drive?

Last week, I was test driving a new Honda with a salesperson when a deer suddenly darted onto the road. I slammed on the brakes, but we still hit it. The front bumper and grille were damaged, and the deer limped away. Back at the dealership, the sales manager demanded I pay a $500 deductible before leaving.
