Let's set the scene: The apostle Paul is preaching. It's late. A young man named Eutychus is fighting for his life to stay awake in a third-story window. Paul "talked on and on," and Eutychus, in a battle we've all fought, loses. He falls into a deep sleep, plummets three stories, and is picked up dead. (Don't worry, Paul raises him back to life a verse later!)
It's a story that has everything: a long-winded preacher, a sleepy congregant, a dramatic fall, and a miraculous recovery. It’s a comforting reminder that even in the early church, sermons could be so long they were literally deadly.
