can i get banned for skipping my connecting flight?
Every month, I have to fly for work, and honestly, the ticket prices are getting out of hand. We’re talking $400 to $600 just for a one-way domestic trip. Out of frustration, I started looking for cheaper options and stumbled onto something weird: if I book an international flight (like to Mexico) that has a layover in my actual destination city, it’s way cheaper—sometimes just a third of the price. So, I’ve started booking those flights, getting off at my stop in the States, and not bothering with the rest of the trip.
But here’s the catch: since I’m a green card holder, I have to show a return ticket when I travel internationally. So, I book a return flight and then cancel it after I board. I’ve done this twice now, and it’s worked fine. But now my friends are warning me that I could get banned from flying if the airlines catch on, especially since I keep booking and canceling like this. I don’t really get it—if I’m paying for the ticket, why should it matter if I don’t finish the whole trip? Has anyone actually gotten in trouble for this? I feel like I’m just trying to save money, not break any laws, but now I’m worried. Anyone else tried this and had issues?
