How to Actually Get to Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island sits in the East River, a sliver of quiet between Manhattan and Queens. It’s not far, but getting there feels like you’re slipping out a side door of the city.
If you want easy, take the F train—one stop, underground, and you’re there. The Q102 bus crawls over from Astoria if you’re coming from Queens, but don’t expect it to rush. Once you’re on the island, the Red Bus loops you around for free, which feels like cheating the MTA for a few minutes of peace.
But the tram is the move if you want a view: four and a half minutes above the river, watching the city shrink behind glass. Just remember, you need a MetroCard before you show up—no booths, no excuses.
Driving is possible, but parking is a gamble you’ll probably lose. Bike if you can. It’s the only way to arrive without feeling like you’ve already spent half your day getting there.
