When Deron Williams Was Neck-and-Neck With CP3
Before Chris Paul cemented himself as the Point God in LA, there was a real debate: Deron Williams or CP3?
Deron had the size, strength, and athleticism — a power PG who thrived in transition and could bully smaller guards. He led Utah deep into the playoffs early with Boozer, AK47, and Sloan’s system, making him look like the future at the position.
Meanwhile, CP3 was the smaller, craftier, cerebral guard who relied on finesse, IQ, and pick-and-roll mastery. Injuries slowed him early, and that gave DWill the edge in durability and team success.
For a stretch, it wasn’t crazy to say Deron was the guy. Then CP3 kept climbing, and the debate faded.
But peak Deron Williams? He belonged in that conversation.
