Can Spices Make Veggies Taste Good & Healthy?
Growing up, I dreaded dinner whenever veggies were on the menu. My family always steamed them until they were limp and flavorless, and the only way to mask the bitterness was a desperate shake of pepper. I always wondered why we never tried adding more spices or experimenting with different cooking methods. When I asked my mom, she insisted that anything other than plain steaming would destroy the nutrients. But is that really true?
Recently, I started living on my own and decided to challenge this idea. I tossed broccoli with garlic, chili flakes, and a squeeze of lemon before roasting it. The result? Delicious, and I actually wanted seconds! After some research, I found that using spices and roasting or sautéing veggies doesn’t significantly reduce their nutritional value. In fact, some nutrients become more available when cooked!
So, is it possible to make veggies tasty and still healthy? Absolutely. Don’t be afraid to experiment—your taste buds (and your body) will thank you.
