Locked In, Looking Out: Quarantine in Rothenburg

I always thought medieval walls were for fairy tales or Instagram. Turns out, they’re also for quarantine. Three days into my stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the world shut down. The cobblestone streets emptied. I watched the town square from my window—silent, almost staged. The city’s walls, once charming, started to feel like a cage. I’d planned to wander, to get lost in alleys and bakeries. Instead, I counted bricks and rationed instant coffee. I thought I’d crave adventure, but I missed overheard conversations and the freedom to disappear into a crowd. Travel doesn’t always set you free.
