How are y’all making cottage cheese… not gross?

I’m trying to get into cottage cheese for the protein, but I’ve only ever had the pineapple kind my mom used to buy. My friend tried to describe the plain version and said, “It tastes like eating just mayo.” 😬 So now I’m scared. I’ve tried it on toast and in salads, but still not sold yet.
