I Was Granted Asylum, But I Can't Legally Work

I fled Uganda a year ago due to persecution for my sexual orientation. Last month, the immigration judge granted my asylum application! I cried. I thought I was finally free. However, I have to wait 180 days after my asylum grant to apply for a work permit (EAD). For these six months, I can't rent an apartment (no credit history), can't get a driver's license, and can't work legally. I am surviving on food banks and crashing on friends' couches.
