Why Did They Keep Me and Let the Boss Go?

So, picture this: I joined a big company’s marketing team just eight months ago. It was just me and the head of marketing for our region. He did all the talking with HQ, while I was the boots on the ground, getting things done. Yesterday, they let him go. Budget cuts, they said. But they kept me—the new guy. Our salaries aren’t that different, so if it was about saving money, why not just let us both go and run things from HQ like they do elsewhere? He even told me they made it clear I’m safe.
