eating on work trips: do you plan or just wing it?
Last week, I spent three days in Chicago for a conference, and let me tell you, finding a decent meal that wasn’t deep-dish pizza or a sad airport sandwich was a real struggle. I tried searching for a healthy breakfast spot near my hotel, but after wandering around for 20 minutes, I ended up grabbing a muffin from the lobby just to make it to my morning meeting on time. Honestly, I always tell myself I’ll stick to my usual eating habits when I travel, but it never works out. At home, I’m pretty picky—lots of veggies, not too much sugar—but on the road, all those rules seem to fly out the window. My coworkers, on the other hand, don’t seem to care at all; they’ll eat anything as long as it’s quick. I can’t help but wonder if I’m the only one who feels guilty about eating poorly on work trips. Is it even possible to eat well when you’re away from home, or is it just a lost cause? I’m starting to think that maybe I should just give in and enjoy the local food, but then I worry about how I’ll feel when I get back. Anyone else get frustrated trying to balance eating right and enjoying the trip?
