🚨 Venice: Investigators say a man forced his way into an apartment. Minutes later, he was dead. The Venice Police Department has released preliminary findings in the fatal shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning at the Maren apartment complex on Vistera Boulevard. According to investigators, 32-year-old Terry Lee Murphy of Venice allegedly forced his way into a resident’s apartment after the resident answered a knock at the door. Police say surveillance video shows the resident trying to keep Murphy out, but Murphy allegedly forced his way inside, assaulted the resident, repeatedly threatened to shoot him while keeping one hand behind his back in a way that made the resident believe he was armed, and attempted to force the resident to leave his own apartment against his will. Investigators also say they recovered evidence of prior conflicts between the two men, including evidence the resident provided of previous alleged threats made by Murphy. During the confrontation, police say the resident retrieved a firearm from a bedroom. A struggle over the gun followed, and the firearm discharged, striking Murphy. According to investigators, Murphy then fled the apartment, went down two floors, and entered another apartment that had been inadvertently left unlocked. The occupant found Murphy inside, called 911, and Murphy later died at the scene. Police also say Murphy entered the apartment complex by climbing over a perimeter fence before the incident. The investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and digital evidence. The Venice Police Department emphasized that it does not determine whether the use of deadly force was legally justified. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Office of the State Attorney, which will make that determination under Florida law. #crime #police #LawEnforcement #shooting #venice #news

#news Report confirms DC Police Chief deliberately manipulated crime statistics to make it look like the nation's capital was safer than it actually was. #DC A report released by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has detailed how outgoing D.C., Metro PD Chief Pamela A. Smith - appointed by Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2023 - used retaliation and fear to push through fake statistics. The report was in part based on transcribed interviews with commanders from all seven MPD patrol districts and one suspended former commander. #police Whistleblower testimony revealed Smith “coerced staff to report artificially low crime data and cultivated a culture of fear to achieve her agenda.” The manipulation is being described as dangerous. Details: 🔸️Smith pressured and sometimes directly told commanders to downgrade serious crime classifications to lesser offenses not included in public datasets, such as the Daily Crime Report. 🔸️Pressured Commanders to report lower crime statistics by any means necessary 🔸️She required certain crimes to be reviewed by her office before final classification, incentivizing underreporting. 🔸️Commanders were pushed to use charges that avoided public scrutiny, creating the illusion of declining crime rates. 🔸️Briefings involved public berating of commanders for rising crime figures, with some feeling treated as if they committed the crimes themselves. 🔸️The report also highlighted Smith's alleged retaliation against officers resisting her commands: 🔸️Retaliatory transfers and demotions were used against MPD officials who reported accurate statistics. 🔸️Subordinates faced intimidation, threats, and humiliation for failing to lie about crime 🔸️This fostered a toxic environment of fear, contributing to low morale, officer exodus, and recruitment challenges. 🔸️The allegations surfaced following a 2023 spike in violence that Democrat policies failed to address, prompting President Donald Trump to send in the National Guard

Why Do Cops Always Say 'Honesty Goes a Long Way' When They're About to Search Your Car?

I've been watching a bunch of body cam footage lately. A cop pulls someone over, gets them out of the car, and then tries to get them to admit what they have inside. I always hear them say things like "A little bit of stolen goods ain't no big deal, man, if you're straight with me I'll be straight with you," or "I'm not looking for a stolen item, brother, honesty goes a long way." It makes me wonder what the point is. They are practically going to tear the car apart anyway. It seems pointless if the person says "Yeah, I've got a stolen phone in there." And I talked with some friends. One of them said for a cop, having probable cause to search is good, but having consent to search is way better. A defense lawyer can poke holes in probable cause all day long, but they can't really argue with consent if you gave it. Plus, if a driver says "There's a stolen laptop in the trunk," that's a confession. It proves that the laptop belonged to them and wasn't just left there by accident by somebody else. A case where they find evidence is a good case. A case where the person told them exactly where to find it is a great case. #Police #Law #LegalAdvice #Curiosity #Honesty #TrafficLaws
