So I went to the REI flagship in Seattle—total wallet danger zone.

Not even an outdoor person, but this place feels like an epic playground and museum for anyone who is. There’s a 20-meter indoor climbing wall that’s basically screaming ‘come try me’ (even if you don’t climb, it’s so photo-worthy). Plus mountain bike trails and hiking paths right inside? Hikers only but beware the bikes lol. The store’s wrapped in this lush fake forest with waterfalls—felt like I was suddenly in a national park. And apparently, the fireplace lights up in winter? Mood 100. Patagonia, Arc’teryx, and tons more brands have their own spots… prices? No idea, just admiring from a safe distance (aka broke). If you’re ever in Seattle, it’s at 222 Yale Ave N. Checked out Mesa Rim in San Diego this weekend—honestly?

From the outside it looked like a giant metal box (we thought it’d be so hot), but the AC inside? Freezing. $31 for a day pass 💀 kinda steep. We mostly stayed in the bouldering zone—Saturday afternoon crowd, good vibes. The wall shapes are fun, but some holds felt greasy… like hello, can I get a fresh jug?? And the grades?? Wild. A few moments are enough when climbing.

Two sessions a week for two months—still mediocre, but joy isn’t about skill. Climbing mirrors life: some bold, some cautious, some obsess over details, some shrug it off. For me, it’s learning to accept my body, my fear, my limits. Success feels amazing, but so do the small wins: figuring out a beta, inching forward on a stuck route, applause from strangers, or climbing a tree I couldn’t before. Outdoor climbing makes you nostalgic for the climbing gym—but in a good way.

Outdoor climbing is a whole different beast. Every step has countless natural holds, each choice affecting your technique—arm reach, strength, knee position—all like solving a puzzle. Sometimes it feels like navigating life at 23, not knowing if the next hold is solid. If you don’t trust it, you get locked, muscles screaming, fear and effort cranking every fiber. The rock feels nothing like gym holds—sometimes silky, sometimes jagged, often sun-baked with a desert-like warmth. As our guide Yan joked, once you’ve climbed outside, the gym feels… small. Recently obsessed with the climbing community @balancing_acts, founded by @rocks.cac and backed by Arc’teryx. They run free outdoor climbing clinics focused on marginalized groups—2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, Black, and more. Saw their visuals on Arc’teryx’s IG—super creative and diverse styles that really stand out. They’re on a world tour, mostly in North America and Europe, building gear, transport, and community access. Their motto? “If you come as you are, you are already enough.” It’s refreshing to see a sports community with real purpose, free events, cool visuals, and merch—not just hype. New to climbing, but still somehow looking cool.

Had my first climbing session and wow—using only upper body strength, no leg help, left my hands shaking after an hour. Checked my back in photos… honestly, kinda badass 😎. Climbed at Allez Up in Montreal—three locations, bouldering and rope walls with mats. Beginners can start with bouldering, no stress, friendly vibes, and everyone’s there to challenge themselves. Toronto indoor climbing—way more fun than I expected!

My sis recommended this indoor climbing gym in Toronto, and wow, it’s such a blast! The staff are super patient and helpful—like lending me a locker lock and teaching me how to use it (last time I used one was high school 😂). Took their beginner class—friendly instructor, safety first, and they even offered a $25 upgrade to a monthly membership after the 1.5-hour course. Perfect for weekend adventures with my sis! Hands get red and sore after every session, but hitting those climbs feels so rewarding. Already crushed 5.7 and 5.8 routes—next stop, harder ones! The gym’s got top rope and bouldering, so you can spend all day trying lines. My sis loves it too—definitely a vibe for introverts like me.
