is travel insurance at checkout actually worth it? my real experience

Last week, my partner and I had what was supposed to be a simple flight from Detroit (DTW) to Honolulu (HNL) on Delta. Well, you know how travel plans go—Mother Nature had other ideas. We got rerouted to Kona because of a storm, and let me tell you, that airport is basically outdoors. We were soaked, exhausted, and there was nowhere to sit or even nap. To make things worse, every hotel nearby was over $1,000 a night! I felt like I was in some weird reality show for sleep-deprived travelers. Delta tried to help by putting us on a flight the next day at 11am, but then that got pushed back to 8pm. At this point, we hadn’t slept in almost two days. Out of desperation, we booked a Hawaiian Airlines flight, but—surprise!—that one got cancelled too. We ended up buying new tickets for the next morning, and for the first time ever, I actually clicked that little travel insurance option at checkout. It was about $15, and honestly, I only did it because I was sure we’d be delayed again (and we were, by over 2 hours). Here’s the shocker: I always thought those travel insurance offers were a scam or just a waste of money. But three days after our flight was delayed, I got $250 straight into my bank account. The process was easy, the app was simple, and the customer service folks were actually helpful (shoutout to AllyzSmartTravel by Allianz). Has anyone else ever actually gotten paid out by one of these checkout travel insurance policies? Or did I just get super lucky? I’m still a little skeptical—like, is this a one-time miracle, or are these policies actually worth it? Would love to hear your stories, especially if you’ve had a bad experience. And seriously, what’s the most you’ve ever gotten from travel insurance? #travelinsurance #flightdelays #realexperience #travelwoes #middleagedtravel #Travel
