From 3'10" to 4'11": One Woman's Journey to Face-Level Conversations Chandler Crews, born with achondroplasia (the most common form of dwarfism), reached her full adult height of 3 feet 10 inches by age 16, which made daily tasks challenging. To gain independence, she underwent a series of grueling limb-lengthening surgeries over four years at the International Center for Limb Lengthening in Baltimore. The procedures involved breaking her leg and arm bones and gradually separating them to stimulate new bone growth. The results were transformative: · She grew 13 inches in height, from 3'10" to 4'11". · She gained 4 inches in arm length. · She gained significant functional independence, allowing her to have face-to-face conversations, reach objects, drive comfortably, and navigate spaces more easily. Following her experience, Chandler founded The Chandler Project, a nonprofit that connects people with achondroplasia to resources and information about surgical treatments. While controversial in the dwarfism community, Chandler believes the procedures were worth it for the lifetime of improved function and independence they provided. In 2016, a surgical team at Texas Children’s Hospital performed one of the most intricate procedures in modern medicine. At 23 weeks gestation, a fetus was found to have a huge sacrococcygeal teratoma, a rare tumor that can overwhelm the heart and be fatal before birth. Dr Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian-born pediatric surgeon, helped lead the open fetal operation. The fetus was partially brought out of the uterus while remaining attached to the placenta, enabling surgeons to remove most of the tumor and then return her so she could continue developing. The pregnancy proceeded to 36 weeks, and she was safely born; the remaining tumor tissue was removed after delivery. The case stands as a remarkable example of how advanced fetal surgery can change outcomes before life even begins outside the womb. #PregnancyStruggles #Pregnancy #TexasNews #TexasRangers #Viral #ViralPost #Trending #TrendingNow
