Navigating Grief and New Roles: Raising Our Granddaughter After Loss

Last spring, we lost our daughter and son-in-law in a tragic accident. Since then, our eleven-year-old granddaughter, L, has come to live with us. The pain of losing our child is something we never imagined, and watching L grieve her parents has been heartbreaking. We love her deeply and are grateful she’s with us, but stepping into the role of full-time parents at this stage is a huge adjustment. The boundaries have shifted—discipline is no longer something we can leave to her parents, and that’s been tough for all of us. We’re all in counseling, and we’re trying to find a balance between compassion and structure. Some days are harder than others, but we’re learning together. Has anyone else faced a similar journey?
